FAQ
Who is rebirthing suitable for – and who is it not suitable for?
In my experience, rebirthing is suitable for people who are willing to let go of their ego and want to experience themselves in a “new” way. Those who are only in their heads, who always want to classify and categorize things, and who always seek a rational explanation for everything, will quickly realize in a breathing session that rebirthing is precisely about “not” doing that. On the other hand, this is precisely why rebirthing is particularly suitable for “head people”, because it gives them a simple method to finally “switch off” their heads.
Under the same aspect, rebirthing is also absolutely unsuitable for “good people”. Those who only ever want the morally “good & noble” and therefore fight the despicable “bad & abysmal” both internally and externally will also quickly discover that all of this is “also” within them. And this is precisely why rebirthing is also ideally suited to the “guardians of morality and decency”, because it enables them to feel new aspects of themselves and really broaden their horizons.
Since it is about breathing, it is essential that you are able to breathe independently, i.e., without additional equipment. You should also be in a “normal” physical and mental state. Otherwise, there are no special requirements.
Is rebirthing dangerous?
Yes, for your ego. Rebirthing brings us back to our true core, to our “self”. You have probably already experienced what that feels like, for example when you are in love. Love is the death of the ego. You feel yourself flowing and are only slightly “in your head”. This is how it could be compared to living from your “true self” in everyday life. Ultimately, the ego is just a construct that we have built up from early childhood to define ourselves. At some point, however, there comes a point where you are no longer happy with it in the long run. Because the ego always wants to “have” in order to be happy. If it doesn’t get what it wants, it is unhappy. The solution therefore lies not in “having” but in “being”. Because ‘being’ is our true self. It “is”. That is where rebirthing leads us, namely to what “is”. In other words, to ourselves …
However, the ego has a strong instinct for self-preservation and does not like it when it is stripped away layer by layer. It will therefore do everything it can to stay alive. These are the moments when the inner voice says, “I’ll think about it”. And suddenly you find yourself back in your head and everything is fine.
How does connected breathing work?
Quite simply, connected breathing means that you don’t take a short pause between inhaling and exhaling. Of course, this only works if you either breathe in and out through your nose or only through your mouth. If you alternate, for example breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth, it would no longer be “flowing”. It is preferable to always breathe in and out through the nose during rebirthing, as this corresponds to natural and relaxed breathing.
Secondly, connected breathing means that you don’t “push” anything, i.e. you let your breathing work completely independently, just as it does all the time around the clock. However, you pay more attention to the exhalation. This means that you “follow” the exhalation in that you observe how the body lets itself fall loosely into the exhalation. The inhalation happens all by itself again, but does not need to be followed mentally. In short: you don’t need to do anything to “control” your breathing in any way.
A particularly effective method is breathing using an “integration tool”. You immediately feel as if “it is breathing me” and can thus let yourself fall into your breath without detours.
What does “connected breathing” do?
Conscious connected breathing draws more attention to your body. This makes it easier to perceive the energetic patterns. That is one thing. The other effect is that relaxed breathing “simulates” that you have already integrated the energetic pattern. And this promotes or supports the actual integration.
Why do you need a professional rebirther to learn rebirthing?
You can try it without a professional rebirther. However, you would quickly realize that you keep getting cought up in old patterns and make very slow progress, if any at all. This is because the ego wants to prevent itself from being dissolved. As a result, you will constantly distract yourself and probably give up after a short time.
If you have a professional rebirther at your side, he will make sure that you don’t do that. He will use his intuition and experience to encourage you to stay focused on the breathing process (i.e., not to drift off) and to feel safe in everything you do. This is because a professional rebirther knows from his own experience how the rebirthing process works and can therefore give you the security you need to fully engage with yourself.
What does a rebirther do during a rebirthing session?
From a purely external point of view, relatively little. The rebirthee lies on the floor on a mat, has his eyes closed (to better focus their gaze inwards) and simply observes what is currently there in his body. In addition, he remains attentive to his breath. The main task of the rebirther is – if you want to call it that – that of a motivator. Namely in that he repeatedly guides the rebirthee to stay with his energetic patterns and keep going. A good rebirther intuitively recognizes this. It’s about looking at “the” energetic patterns that you normally don’t want to feel and flee into familiar avoidance strategies.
The second task of the rebirther is simply to be there so that the rebirthee has the feeling of security to simply let any energetic patterns that arise come and go. Because a professional rebirther has had so many experiences that he knows that the worst thing that can happen during a rebirthing is that you still don’t want to feel an energetic pattern. That’s all it is. You are, so to speak, back at the point where you were before. If, on the other hand, you “go through” the energetic pattern (or rather: let it unfold by itself), it dissolves. And that frees you and gives you new momentum. The rebirther therefore “does” relatively little. The effect is basically just his presence, so that the rebirthee can learn the technique “by himself” through experience.
Why do you need at least eight sessions to learn rebirthing?
Every beginning is difficult. Firstly. Secondly, no two sessions are alike. Once an energetic blockage has been dissolved, it will not return in the same form. In this respect, you will have new experiences during each breathing session. It’s like driving a car. In principle, you could drive alone after your first driving lesson, but only after at least eight driving lessons will you have experienced so many different situations – with your driving instructor at your side (who gives you security by his mere presence) – that you will be able to drive alone in a relaxed manner in the future.
How long does a rebirthing session last?
A “classic” breathing session with a rebirther, or if you give yourself a session, lasts an hour on average. Once you have gained enough experience, you will increasingly be able to apply rebirthing “in between” in your daily life. For example, when standing at the supermarket checkout, during a meeting, while cooking, or while walking the dog. Whenever you notice in everyday life that a previously suppressed energy is being reactivated, you can look inside yourself completely unnoticed and “rebirth” yourself in the process.
How often should the sessions be held?
For beginners, it is recommended to have at least eight sessions with a professional rebirther. These should take place at intervals of approximately one week. Why? To stay on track. If the intervals are too long, it is easy to lose yourself in your ego again. And then your ego says, “Give it up, it’s pointless”. And just like that, it has won and you are back to living as you did before. So it has achieved nothing.
Once you have internalized the technique well, the interval between further sessions depends only on how much time you want to take for yourself.
Do I also have to learn “theory” in rebirthing?
Yes and no. Rebirthing sessions are primarily about practice. From session to session, you get a “feel” for how and why it works. At the same time, the professional rebirther provides supporting “theoretical” information to accelerate the integration of energetic patterns. These are specially developed “integration tools” (questions, negations, perspectives). I will explain exactly how this works before, during, and after the sessions.
Does rebirthing have anything to do with positive thinking?
No. Absolutely not. Positive thinking always means that you “overlay” something good, beautiful, motivating, noble, and positive onto what you “devalue”. That may feel nice and good, but it doesn’t change the fact that the energetic pattern is still there. It is simply kept “unconscious” (suppressed) and a positive thought (thought = words & images) is added to the consciousness.
Rebirthing is not about positive or negative “thoughts.” It is about energetic patterns. And it is about consciously looking at them and dissolving them with special techniques. After that, there are neither positive nor negative “thoughts”, but a liberating “feeling”.
How can you tell if you are doing rebirthing “correctly”?
First, you would have to define what “correct” and “incorrect” mean in rebirthing. However, I would not describe it as correct or incorrect, but rather as ‘integrative’ and “suppressive”.
What do I mean by that? When you “suppress”, you don’t want to perceive certain emotions, feelings, or energetic patterns and blockages in the body. At some point in life, you have made an assessment of something, and anything that does not correspond to the ideal is “devalued”.
Now there are two things in life that feel unpleasant. One is pain and the other is the feeling you get when you devalue something. So when something feels unpleasant, the easiest solution is to block it out of your field of vision, i.e., out of your perception. That is the principle of suppression. And we all have countless suppressed energies stored in our bodies. However, we usually only perceive them for a fraction of a second and then automatically direct our attention elsewhere.
I would argue, that without consciously realizing it, our lives are largely geared toward “not” having to experience pain and everything we devalue. So it’s “away from” rather than “towards” something. Because even the goals (towards) that we have in life are often just an escape (away from) from unpleasant feelings. For example: desperately wanting to be in a relationship just to avoid feeling lonely.
The opposite of devaluing is “integrating”. And this has a double meaning. When you integrate something, firstly, there is no devaluation, and secondly, you are not ‘doing’ anything, in contrast to the “doing” of devaluing. Integrating therefore means perceiving everything that is there as what it is. Period. So if you do rebirthing wrong, it means that you simply continue your suppression games, even during a breathing session. In the best case, it has achieved nothing; in the worst case, you feel “even” worse for a short time afterwards because connected breathing has brought to light devalued energies that you had decided not to feel.
Doing rebirthing “right” therefore means consciously looking at the energies that show up during connected breathing in all their details and giving them the space and time to unfold in the body. Every energy comes and goes in its own natural cycle – if you let it. And that is what rebirthing is all about. Once an energy has gone away on its own, it has been “integrated”. And what a miracle: you are still there afterwards. Energies come and go, but you remain “yourself”. What diminishes is the ego with all its ego games.
How can you tell that you have “integrated” something? There are three signs:
First, a spontaneous, deep, and free breath. After that, you feel very relaxed for a few minutes.
Second: spontaneous laughter. When there is no more inner struggle, laughter begins. But why do we humans laugh at all? Something is hilarious when two opposing points of view, which are both true in themselves, are presented. Laughter is, so to speak, the reaction when opposites cancel each other out. So if you have previously held on to a devalued point of view and now see things from a different perspective – which is just as true – then the previous negative point of view is erased. This is integration.
And thirdly: the feeling of “timelessness“. When there are no more comparisons, the mind can no longer “switch back and forth“. The feeling of time always arises in polarity when we compare. No more “opposites“, therefore no more sense of time.
To stay with the example of a relationship. If you were to integrate loneliness instead of devaluing it as before, you would no longer have an inner struggle and would therefore really have a free choice. Either you enjoy being without a relationship, or you enter into a new relationship in freedom. And if that relationship ends at some point, you enjoy that state again in complete freedom.
What are typical “avoidance“ strategies?
Anything that causes a (strong) inner “urge“ without consciously perceiving the underlying duality mechanism (the evaluation scale).
For example: the inner urge to always buy the best/latest smartphone
Possible underlying duality mechanism:
Evaluation: good/ideal: being “up to date“ = being accepted by society
Bad/pejorative: not being “up to date“ = being excluded
Or: good/ideal: the feeling of being “valuable“, because you own a “valuable“ smartphone
Bad/pejorative: the feeling of being “worthless“
To stick with the second example: once you have established the inner assessment that feeling “worthless“ is “bad“, a duality mechanism automatically arises, and with it many avoidance strategies to ensure that you never have to feel this way again in your life. And anyone who accumulates many “valuable“ things in life for this very reason knows that it does not make them happy in the long run. Why? Because the “unpleasant“ energetic pattern is still there. If, on the other hand, you dissolve it, you feel good both “with“ and “without“ valuable possessions.
What other “typical“ avoidance strategies are there?
For example, the urge to consume alcohol, cigarettes, medication, or stimulants; excessive working; eating too much or too little; constant consumption of digital media (television, surfing the internet, social platforms); always needing to be with company or in a relationship, or all forms of compulsion (compulsive control, perfectionism, etc.).
This is just a “rough“ overview.
What are the benefits of rebirthing? What are the specific advantages?
Primarily: freedom. As long as you suppress energies in your life, you are not truly free. This is because you close yourself off from the things you run away from or do not want to feel in your life. However, this has nothing to do with the things themselves, but only with the evaluation of the things. If, on the other hand, you are free “within” these energies through the integration of previously suppressed energies, then you are also free in all these areas in the “outer” world. And that feels simply fantastic.
Other possible positive effects:
- Mental: fewer recurring thoughts; fewer beliefs, especially “negative” ones; more flexible, creative, and multifaceted thinking; more “free spirit”
- Emotional: a better connection to emotions and therefore less of a feeling of being “at the mercy” of emotions
- Physical: more relaxation, less tension, because you don’t have to “hold on” to energies as much
- Energetic: more energy, because you don’t have to expend as much energy to keep other energies (energetic patterns) suppressed
- Spiritual: more in touch with your own true “self”
- In life: less rigid and restrictive behavior patterns; less rat race, more pure, enjoyable life; more freedom …
